MILKY WAY
Dumitru Budrala / Romania / 2026 / 120 min
Milky Way – A film by Dumitru Budrala. A father and son traverse the hills with thousands of sheep, sleeping under the open sky and braving the cold. Up in the mountains, the mother tends the cattle and keeps the household running, waiting for her children to return from boarding school. Between prayer, work and weekly sleigh journeys to the monastery, her life follows a rhythm as tenacious as the flock’s onward movement.

About the film
Milky Way offers an intimate portrait of a family for whom shepherding means inheritance, survival and separation in equal measure. Distance keeps them apart; caring for their animals and loved ones binds them together. Dumitru Budrala captures the harshness of daily life, the humour and the joy of coming together, without idealising the shepherds’ existence. Through everyday gestures and recurring hardships, a portrait emerges of a family carrying forward centuries of knowledge in a world that leaves ever less room for their way of life.
