The celebration of documentary cinema begins this weekend in Sibiu. Astra Film Festival 2025 will take place between October 17–26, offering a selection of over 70 documentaries from around the world, including 65 world, international, European, or national premieres. The program features debates on the most pressing issues of our time, renowned guests, filmmakers from across the globe, workshops and training programs for students and young directors, concerts and parties, as well as the beloved Astra Film Junior program—dedicated to documentary film education for young audiences.

The Opening Gala of this year’s Astra Film Festival will be hosted by journalist Teodora Tompea, while the Awards Gala will be presented by journalist Amalia Enache.

Five competitive sections and eleven themes that matter

From established filmmakers to emerging voices, from local realities to global perspectives, the Astra Film Festival’s competition lineup brings together the most relevant documentaries of the moment, competing in five main categories: Romania, Eastern Europe, Emerging Voices, DocSchool, and DocShorts. These films reflect the world we live in through real-life stories from all corners of the globe.

The AFF 2025 thematic selection maps out how society is transforming under the impact of the digital era, wars, and manipulation, as illustrated by the festival’s nine thematic sections: Woman / Mother – At What Cost?, #Occident. A Critical Perspective, Faces of Dictatorship, On Both Sides of the Bloody Frontline, The Crisis of Masculinity, Art as a Tool for Self-Exploration and Healing, The New Wave of the Far Right, Becoming an Adult, Becoming a Parent, When the Press Becomes a Fake News Factory.

DocTalks – Debates on some of today’s most urgent issues

The DocTalks discussions start from some of the festival’s most powerful films and aim to foster real dialogue and meaningful connections between people. The debates, hosted at Sala Thalia of the Sibiu Philharmonic, will be moderated by leading journalists and notable guests, including: Florin Negruțiu, Ioana Ciurlea, Anca Suciu, Alex Dima, Paula Herlo, Cristian Leonte, Emilia Șercan, Ramona Ursu, Erika Iasac, Radu Vancu, Ștefan Baghiu, Hari Bucur Marcu, Florin Sperlea, Răzvan Marcu, Ionela Băluță, and Costi Rogozanu.
List of DocTalk debates: Neofascism and the Algorithms of Hate, Swimming Against the System, Femicide and Digital Violence, War and Disinformation, The Crisis of Male Role Models.

Astra Film Junior – Education through documentary film

In a world where children are increasingly absorbed by the digital universe of smartphones, Astra Film Junior offers them a unique tool for learning, empathy, and critical thinking: the documentary film. Because a child who learns to watch a documentary with attention will later know how to observe the world attentively — and understand it.

DocStudent Hub – Year Two at AFF

For the second consecutive year, Astra Film Festival dedicates a special training program to film students from Romania and across Europe, including workshops, masterclasses, and practical activities focused on the art, production, and distribution of documentary cinema. Participants include students and professors from six prestigious universities in Prague, Zagreb, Vilnius, Bratislava, and Zlín (through the Erasmus program), joined by students from Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj and UNATC Bucharest.

The Ex Oriente Features International Workshop – Premiere at AFF

For the first time, the Ex Oriente Features international workshop will be held at Astra Film Festival, between October 19–23, bringing to Sibiu some of the most respected mentors and documentary filmmakers in Europe. Organized by the Institute of Documentary Film, the program supports the development and funding of creative non-fiction projects from Central and Eastern Europe.

The presence of Ex Oriente in Sibiu reaffirms the festival’s role as a European hub for documentary cinema, where education, creation, and industry converge to shape the future of non-fiction filmmaking.
