We Call Her Hanka
What defines our essence? Embarking on a journey to discover her own roots, the director delves into the world of Germany’s indigenous people: the Sorbs, a resilient Slavic community. Over centuries, their language and culture have faced grave threats. Yet, a new generation refuses to yield to this oppression. They champion self-determination, confront the trauma of losing their villages to lignite mining, and reimagine Sorbian identity as an alternative, anti-fascist, and feminist force. In this unique cinematic endeavor, German Anna transforms into Sorbian Hanka. Poetic nature imagery, introspective musings from a first-person narrator, and archaic yet innovative Sorbian music converge to create the very first film dedicated to the Sorbs.

Film Details

Assuming the role of narrator with a personal poetic vision, Grit Lemke embarks on a journey through Germany to explore, alongside her subjects, the life and traditions of the Sorbs—a nearly forgotten people who have managed to survive throughout history by passively but resiliently defending their identity, language, and culture. In this film, we have the opportunity to follow young Sorbs who embrace and strive to live their Sorbian identity, despite the challenges they often face.
