At the dawn of the 20th century, approximately 150,000 Romanians embarked on a journey to the United States in search of new opportunities—one of whom was my great-great-grandfather, Fogoros Ioan. After amassing some wealth, Ioan returned to his homeland and purchased a hectare of land in his native village. Today, as my family resides in America, we face the difficult decision of whether to sell this ancestral land. Exploring the impacts of migration on my family, as we grapple with the realities of living far from our ancestral land. Juxtaposing archival footage from the early 2000s—filmed by my parents and me—with contemporary discussions with family members. The narrative spans from Ioan’s initial migration to America to our own modern-day experience through the Diversity Visa Lottery. The film confronts the reality of cultural displacement and the search for identity, framed by my family’s own longing for the Romanian landscapes, absent in American surroundings. “God, turn our pennies into dollars” is a heartfelt narrative about the spaces we inhabit and the profound yearning for a place that feels like home.
