Alex Dima / Romania / 2026 / 42 min
“Statul degeaba” is part of the machinery of a state that consumes enormous resources just to function poorly. In Romania, there are hundreds of small localities with administrations, public positions, and expenses that have been supported by the public budget for years, even as available funds continue to shrink. Merging small localities could cut costs by billions of lei every year and make public administration more efficient. Yet this is an issue that, for decades, no government has had the courage to see through to the end.Alex Dima goes back into the field to uncover what lies behind the figures: nearly empty institutions, people being paid to administer increasingly smaller communities, and public money being spent on a system that stubbornly refuses to change. An investigation into the waste we see, pay for, and that no one seems willing to stop.
