Das Deutsche Volk

The film investigates the roots of a recent tragedy: in 2020, a neo-Nazi motivated attack claimed the lives of ten people of immigrant origin. It follows the victims’ families, confronted not only with loss but also with a state that delays answers and perpetuates institutionalized racism. Alongside their mourning, these families — together with local activists — attempt to build a memorial, only to face opposition from the community, which refuses to allow it in the center of Hanau, where symbols of so-called ‘pure’ German culture still dominate. Through a sober, observational montage and an emphasis on the power of detail, the film opens a necessary reflection on the hidden mechanisms shaping German society.
