Protecting sons from the Tate influence
The starting point for this debate is the documentary Portrait of a Confused Father, a haunting cinematic confession about the father–son relationship, the fragility of life, and the often-confused search for masculine identity. Built from archival footage filmed by the director over more than 20 years, the film follows the story of his son, Jonathan — a charismatic yet vulnerable young man who, in his struggle to find his place in the world, falls victim to painful compromises and toxic influences. His journey intersects with the shadows of the online world and the Tate phenomenon, culminating in the tragedy of a premature death.Drawing on the story of this film, the debate will tackle uncomfortable yet necessary questions: How can a parent remain relevant and present for their child in a society dominated by influencers, algorithms, and social networks? How can parents guide boys to recognize their natural need for male role models and values, while avoiding the risk of internalizing toxic patterns?
