This Thursday’s film: Pregnant in Romania

How does the fate of pregnant women and future children depend on the corrupt, deficient and insanitary Romanian health system?

The film Pregnant in Romania (directed by Jesús del Cerro) is an overview of pregnancy in Romania through a series of interviews with mothers (to-be) from all social strata – on Thursday, March 23rd, at 7 PM at Astra Film Cinema.

More than 40 women living in Romania and Spain are interviewed on social issues such as the viability vs. dysfunctionality of the public health system, work-related discrimination or the role of their life partners in upbringing children. Despite the major differences in terms of age, education, occupation or financial means, all of them must face a common denominator, the Romanian state.

On the other hand, among all these factors, at least one of them significantly influences the quality of health services: money. The film Pregnant in Romania highlights the cynicism of the Romanian reality not just in terms of the lack of support for future mothers, but also by revealing a highly conservative society in regard to the condition of women overall.

Some cases are heartbreaking but, unfortunately, most of them are shocking and raise a lot of serious issues. I hope this film will raise awareness of the audience with respect to these issues and, provided it doesn’t clearly improve the lives of pregnant women, it could at least spark critical discussions, necessary to start addressing these inequalities that these women are faced with!”, states the director of the film, Jesús del Cerro.

One ticket is 6 lei. Tickets are available 30 minutes before the screening at Astra Film Cinema (Piața Mică 11, Sibiu). For further information, call: 0751.166.516
