Day 4: The New Gypsy Kings & live concerts

Astra Film Festival 2016 presents on Thursday, the 20 of October 2016, for the first time in Romania, The New Gypsy Kings, a highly acclaimed documentary produced by Liviu Tipuriță for the BBC. The screening is at the centre of a special event that starts at 8:30 pm at Thalia Hall. The film will be followed by Q&A with director Liviu Tipuriță and the protagonists of the documentary: Dan Bursuc & Kana Jambe Band, Taraful de Haiduci and Puiu Iosif Gheorghiu, the Impresario of Gypsy pop superstar Florin Salam. There will be live concerts with the two bands before and after the film.

The New Gypsy Kings gives us an insight into the heart of the incredible world of Roma superstars in Romania, a world which is populated by fast cars and luxurious palaces. The Roma community is one of the most marginalized and poorest ones in Europe and for many years the traditional Gypsy music had been their only export goods. However, a new sound has appeared - Manele – which has invaded the whole country. The Manele stars can earn up to 20,000 Euros per night at opulent weddings, where guests literally throw money at them. Their YouTube posts have millions of views.

Traditional singers, such as the famous band Taraf de Haiduci, who performed for Johnny Depp and appeared in many cinematic productions, complain that the Manele music made them go bankrupt and that will destroy Gypsy music. This documentary analyzes the soundtrack of an exceptional social and cultural change. Viewers have the opportunity to take a look inside the prosperous industry of Manele music.

Circumscribed spaces

Three documentaries explore the spaces where we live and the unnoticeable way in which they shape our daily experiences down to the last detail. OIn Thursday, the 20 of October, at 6:30 pm, at Astra Film Cinema three films will be screened –  Pallasseum – Invisible City – which enters the biggest residential complex of Berlin, harboring 2,000 people of 25 different nationalities, Techsquat – which offers an insight into the industry of start-ups through the experience of a group of young entrepreneurs who try to create their own Silicon Valley in an apartment in Prague, and 1 Building and 40 People Dancing – which focuses on the elderly inhabitants of a public housing building.

The best documentary from Sarajevo, now in Sibiu

Also on Thursday, at 7:00 pm, in the presence of director Monica Lăzurean-Gorgan, the film A Mere Breath will be screened, having won recently the Award for Best Documentary – The Heart of Sarajevo, at the Sarajevo International Film Festival. Dorin Sicrea lives with his wife and three children in Copșa Mică, the most polluted city in Europe before 2009, when the Sometra plant, where he was working, was shut down. In an almost post-apocalyptic landscape dominated by the plant’s towering construction, the film looks at the way the profoundly religious life of the parents intersects with the illness of their youngest daughter, who is semi-paralyzed.
