Day 2 at Astra Film Festival 2016
Astra Film Festival 2016 continues on Tuesday, the 18 of October, with a series of top-notch cinematic events, meetings with great filmmakers, special programmes and live music performances.
A masterpiece of documentary film, The Pearl Button, directed by Patricio Guzmán, awarded the Silver Bear at the Berlin Inernational Film Festival, will be screened at the Auditorium Hall of ULBS at 10:30 pm. The film dives into the murky waters of Pinochet’s dictatorship, in search of the last inhabitants of the Land of Fire.
Meeting with Cristi Puiu
Director Cristi Puiu, “one of one of the most truly distinctive (and philosophically fascinating voices of 21st century filmmaking” (Sight & Sound magazine published by British Film Institute), member of the AFF 2016 jury and author of the film that opened the 23rd editiion of the festival, will meet the audience at 6:00 pm at Salut Bistro (13 Cetăţii Street).
Three films and a live concert invite the AFF 2016 audience to embark on a journey into the fabulous history of the Aromanian people, on Tuesday, the 18 of October, at 5:00 pm, at Thalia Hall. Aromanians, a people older than 2,000 years, have witnessed long gone times of glory, leaving behind small communities scattered around the Balkans. Their history and language are the least known out of any other European peoples.
The common ground of the films Armânii, at the famous Manakia to I’m not famous... and Manakia Brothers. Diary of a long way back is the story of the Manakia brothers, whom some call the Lumière brothers of the Balkans. Torna, torna, fratre! questions just how much of the Aromanian identity and culture is left nowadays. Ech screening shall be followed by Q&As in which the directors of the three films will participate: Toma Enache, Eliza Zdru and Marian Voicu. The audience has the chance to discover the Aromanian spirit through music as well, with the concert of Aromanian music and the live performance by Mara & Band, scheduled at 10:00 pm.
Vlogging este a new means of expression, a modern day diary. When documentarians turn to this type of multimedia, we may expect their films to be particularly powerful, both in terms of format and content. Three documentaries which will be screened on Tuesday, the 18 of October, at 6:30 pm at Gong Theatre, incorporate in their making this new trend in virtual reality.
Alisa in Warland is a chronicle of a turbulent period in the director’s life and it describes her way from Euromaidan to the front line of the war with Eastern separatists. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Stephane Siohan, one of the film’s characters. Czech Against Czechs is a cinematic coverage that explores the xenophobia which exists in the Czech society, from the perspective of the director’s personal experience gained during the time she had lived next to a Roma community. Director Tomas Kratochvil, present in Sibiu, will answer the questions of the audience following the screening. The Dazzling Light of Sunset goes inside a small local TV station in Georgia.
